A Distant Memory

When I was young, I was very close with my grandparents on my mother's side of the family. In fact, for part of my life, I actually lived with them.

I am reminded of a long ago Sunday when I was about 7 years old. It was this time of the year and we had all gone 'up north' to do some fishing. (By 'up north' I'm referring to the upper peninsula.) Those were the days when everyone could pile up in the back of a pick-up truck and nobody thought twice about it. So there we were, my Grandma, my Mom, my little brother, my cousin Mike, and me, all sitting in the back of the truck making bologna sandwiches and drinking Faygo soda having the time of our life. My Grandpa always had a topper on the back of his truck with sliding windows so we could slide the windows open and talk to the people in the cab.

I'm so glad I had that moment in time.

My Grandma is now passed away. She died from lung cancer about 11 years ago. I'm not close with my Grandpa at all anymore. I haven't seen him in about 6 years. It's so weird how things change.

I can't begin to think of how many long trips we took with kids sitting loose in the back of a station wagon. Or standing up in the back seat to get a better look. Whenever the driver slammed on the brakes, kids would go flying! That was just the way it was, nobody thought twice about it back then!

the good old days, when you could nap in the back window of the car, and seatbelts were just.... there. All you really needed was your mom's arm across your chest to hold you in place when she braked....

Of course, I did have a lot of bruises from it, but still good times.

I totally forgot about the arm across the chest thing!! You are so right Bobby.

I used to stand up all the time in my Dad's truck Chicken Little. Those were difinitely the days.

I'd like to see how effective your mother's arm across your chest is in a car accident.

Actually, that method is a great way to sexually harass your date without sexually harassing them. Or...wouldn't that make it sexual harassment right there?

Question: Why haven't you seen your grandfather in 6 years???

He lives downstate now Phoenix, and pretty much keeps to himself. It's a 4 hour drive, which seems relatively short, but when you drive 4 hours down and get pretty much ignored by him, it gets kind of upsetting. He hasn't been the same since my grandma died.

seahag, glad I could jog that memory of yours! Sometimes it's nice to open that old box of nostalgia and get the memories going.
